Gastric Cancer

The 2 types of gastric cancer are:

  • Intestinal adenocarcinoma - Common on lesser curvature of stomach

  • Diffuse adenocarcinoma - Associated with Signet cells


The most important risk factor here is Chronic H. pylori infection. Other risk factors include:

  • EBV infection

  • Diet - Mainly food with nitrates or salt-based preservatives (fresh fruits and vegetables are protective here)

  • Smoking, Alcohol

  • Autoimmune gastritis

  • Inherited syndromes (rare)


Patients present with:

  • IDA (iron-deficiency anaemia)

  • Hx of new-onset Dyspepsia

  • Early satiety (anorexia)

  • Weight loss

  • Progressive dysphagia


Invesitgations - Endoscopy w/biopsy, and a staging CT


Management - Surgery, chemo/radiotherapy, targeted therapy
